Ford has been developing and perfecting its fleet of self-driving Ford Fusion Hybrids with the University of Michigan for years. This September, however, the automaker is teaming up with a surprising new partner—Domino's Pizza.
Several hours south of Alpena, randomly-chosen Domino's customers in Ann Arbor will get their deliveries from a self-driving Fusion.
Though at first glance, you wouldn't expect a pizza company to be an expert on technology, Domino's is actually the ideal partner for testing the practical applications of autonomous vehicles. Food delivery could be one of the primary commercial uses of self-driving cars in the future, and with over 1 billion pizza deliveries each year, Domino's has a lot of experience in that field. And Domino's is no stranger to the tech industry, either—after all, where else can you order food by texting emojis?
"As we increase our understanding of the business opportunity for self-driving vehicles to support the movement of people and goods, we're pleased to have Domino's join us in this important part of the development process," said Sherif Marakby, Ford Vice President, Autonomous and Electric Vehicles. "As a company focused on the customer experience, Domino's shares our vision for a future enabled by smart vehicles in a smart environment that enhance people's lives."
