Cup holders seem like a small detail, but when they are done wrong, it can be a big deal.
Say your stomach is grumbling and you're starting to feel "hangry." You stop at a drive-thru and order some food and a large drink. Trouble is, the drink doesn't fit in the cup holders. So what do you do?
You can't put it down on the floor -- it will spill. So, you figure you can just hold on to it while you drive... but sometimes you need two hands on the wheel. So you wedge it between your legs... but it's freezing and the condensation makes it look like you wet your pants!
You're so distracted (and still hungry-angry), that you don't notice the car in front of you suddenly stop. You tap their bumper, and sugary soft drink flies everywhere.
Don't worry. If you were driving a new 2017 Ford Fusion, that never would have happened.
Ford carefully calibrated the new cup holders to fit 30-ounce fast-food cups (and still have enough spring-loaded grip tension to secure a narrow water bottle, too). And, with the Pre-Collision Assist system, you would be much less likely to be caught in a fender-bender.
